Sixth Form visit to Health & Social care careers fair
BackOn Tuesday 7 November, a group of sixth form students travelled to Lincoln to visit a careers fair organised by the Lincolnshire NHS Talent Academy, showcasing the health sector. www.lincstalentacademy.org.uk
With more than 350 diverse roles available in health and care, the array of stands was amazing with a whole host of jobs and opportunities represented, for students to learn more about the choices that are available.
From podiatry to mental health, adult social care to working in a pharmacy, experts talked about the pathways they took when leaving school and the skills and qualities needed to succeed in the profession.
The wide range of apprenticeships were highlighted, not just for traditional nursing-related careers, but also within catering, HR, finance and business to name but a few.
Students had an opportunity to take part in a number of workshops, relating to jobs in allied health, social care, nursing and medicine. The nursing workshop asked visitors to identify a number of items used in an acute setting and also invited students to try out CPR on an artificial training dummy.
Luke joined the workshop linked to medicine and said:
“I found out some very useful information and had the chance to talk to two current medical students who have accessed the course with very different A level grades. It was really interesting.”
Emma attended an Allied Health workshop and is very keen to train as a Paramedic. She found the fair very useful:
“I spoke to a Paramedic from the East Midlands Ambulance Service stand where they gave me information on how to apply for an apprenticeship with them if I decided that I no longer wanted to go to university. After our chat, the Paramedic gave me their email address and has offered for me to go out on the ambulance with their crew to get first-hand experience of what it is like as a first responder “.
Lucy is considering Dental Nursing:
“I have never been sure which career path to take so it was good to gain knowledge in new courses and apprenticeships available”.
Student Support Adviser, Mrs Pierce and Careers Lead, Mrs Taylor accompanied the students and were able to gather some useful contacts and information to help support careers and work-related conversations with students in the future.
All the students were a credit to the school and made the most of the opportunity to learn more about this diverse sector.
