SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities)

At The Deepings School we cater for a wide range of Special Educational Needs, Disabilities and Medical Needs. We work closely with parents and professionals to assist each child with achieving their true potential, ensuring the curriculum and environment are accessible, while supporting them by removing barriers to their learning.

At the Deepings school we have a robust process for preparing for the transition to Year 7 alongside support when your child is at the school. The processes include us:

  • Working closely with your child’s primary school to gain the information needed to seamlessly support you child.
  • SEND students have a Pupils Passport, which all staff have access to, to ensure that all teachers are aware of their individual needs, so you do not need to worry that the increase in adults accurate support for you child.

You can find all of the information you require here: SEND Information Report 2024-2025

Navigating the school grounds and different lessons.

A common concern is secondary school is much bigger, and your child will go from having one classroom to ten or more classrooms. The visits in the transition period will help students to begin to feel familiar with the environment. The students will get a map alongside their timetable, and they have a base for their tutor group which they attend first thing in the morning, along with their own dedicated canteen, and an outdoor space for break times which is solely for Year 7.  This helps ease them into settling in and familiarisation with the rest of the school.

Curriculum and the learning environment.

Secondary school will feel like a faster pace of teaching, because each teacher only has a 60-minute subject period whereas in primary school the teacher can devote extra time to any subjects the children are struggling with.

Our academic year is split into 3 ‘Learning Cycles’, which includes 10 weeks of teaching, an assessment week and further ‘super teaching week’.   At the start of each Learning Cycle, every student will receive a Scholar’s Guide, a document that captures the key information they need to be prepared for learning. The guide contains valuable information for each subject, an equipment list, timetable, key staff and the most relevant and important knowledge that they will learn through the curriculum in that particular Learning Cycle.

Our curriculum is planned to provide a coherent learning experience for our students as it is carefully sequenced to ensure that students are ready for and ‘notice’ new learning. Students develop strategies that strengthen recall, enabling them to make connections within subjects and across subjects

Meals

The school menus every year prove to be one of changes that Year 7 students are most excited about! We have a variety of meal choices to suit everyone’s preferences and dietary needs. The cycle of menus is available on the website here: The Deeping School Catering

Year 7 students have their own base for purchasing food, The Café, which is open to everyone for Breakfast Club 8.00-8.25 and then Year 7 for break and lunch.

Food is paid for with a fingerprint, processed on the student’s first day. All students have an individual online meal account, via the ParentPay system, which allows parents to check their child’s balance and look at what they have purchased in school.
