Earlier this week, Year 11 students had the opportunity to learn more about the wide range of jobs within the construction and banking sectors.

Former student and alumni Jack Bray talked about his pathway following completion of his GCSEs and A-Levels at The Deepings School. Jack explained how he joined Barclays as a higher degree level operations apprentice with Fraud Operations and achieved his qualification in December 2019. He went on to provide further insight into the apprenticeship route and students seemed impressed with the starting salary of £21,220 from day one!

Jack ran through the 4-step application process and provided links to further information via social media and the Barclays Early Careers website.  He also stressed that students should not automatically dismiss opportunities further afield, in light of the increasing option to work remotely.

The second presentation was delivered by representatives from Burmor Construction. Locally based, students were introduced to the roles of a Structural Engineer, Civil Engineer, Architect, Site Manager and Quantity Surveyor. Key messages included:

• Being part of a thriving industry
• Helping to champion diversity
• Opportunities to design and build the future and inspire future generations
• To be innovate and drive change to creative home for local communities
• Access to personal growth and development

Assistant Business Manager Harriet Hosking was keen to help students challenge the diversity issues that surround the industry and to break down any misconceptions – there are opportunities for all! As a result of the information provided, one of our students has already secured some work experience during the summer break.
