News Bulletin 26 May 2023
BackDear families of The Deepings School,
We have reached the end of another half term and this one has certainly flown by!
In a school the size of The Deepings, there is always plenty going on. This week has been a heavy week for exams for pupils in Year 11 and Year 13. They have been working hard with the majority of the pupils coming out of exams stating it went well and was reasonably favourable. Study leave is yet to commence for Year 11 and pupils are required to be in school until Friday 9 June. Please ensure your son or daughter maximises their time in school as we approach the final hurdle.
Our Year 10 pupils had a ‘Stay Safe Day’ earlier this week. Days such as this take a lot of planning and rely on a body of volunteers from a variety of organisations to come into the school and educate our pupils on staying safe. This education is an important aspect of what is referred to as Personal Development, exposing our pupils to national themes regarding safety which may affect them. This includes sessions covering Online Safety, Healthy Relationships, Gambling Awareness, Drug Awareness, County Lines and First Aid. It was heartening to hear pupils talking positively about the sessions they attended.
As always, there is further information about this event and many more in the new section of our website. This week there has been sporting success, books issued and an open mic event. Please do take the time to look at the events we put on for our pupils.
As this month draws to the end, we approach the teacher resignation deadline. This is similar to the closing of the football transfer window. Teachers must resign by 31 May if they wish to start a new teaching role in September. This causes schools considerable time pressures to fill vacancies, especially during a time when the recruitment and retention of teachers is a national issue. The last few weeks have seen us appoint a number of teachers and leaders for a September start, who will be excellent additions to the school. Whilst we are always sad to see staff move on, we recognise that opportunities arise and people wish to progress. We certainly wish them well in the next steps of their career journey.
Mr Watling and I continue to encourage parents to make an appointment to come and chat to us. Each week we meet parents and very much value the time spent with parents understanding and addressing their views. Please do continue to take us up on this offer next term.
Finally, I wish you all a very pleasant bank holiday weekend and hope our pupils have a lovely half term.
Yours sincerely
Ms K Johnson
Head of School
