Dear Families of The Deepings School

As our school year draws to a close I want to share my reflections on this academic year and plans for the next.

Joining the school with Mr Watling in January, we were quick to identify there were challenges and opportunities for the school. The last 6 months have allowed us, with our senior leadership team, to lay the foundations for successful school improvement as we strive to maximise outcomes for our students.   Since our arrival, systems have been adapted and changed, in a range of areas, with a relentless focus on ensuring that children at our school have an excellent educational experience.   Over the summer we are remodelling various areas of the school to develop our inclusive education and enhance the environment in which our students work. Being part of the Anthem Trust, we have excellent guidance and support to collaboratively work together for educational excellence as we go forward into the next academic year.  The trust mantra of

‘Every student, Every lesson, All the time’

is designed to ensure there is consistency and excellence in the curriculum we deliver, which is an area of work we will continue to develop.  I am excited about the next steps for The Deepings School and I will continue to update you via the newsletter each week.

The last day of term can be full of mixed emotions for students and staff.  There was a very excited buzz as we said goodbye to students at lunchtime, who were keen to share their summer plans and enquire as to whether I would be going away on holiday too!  For our staff today, it has been emotional as some colleagues are moving on to pastures new.  I was privy to a lovely leaving ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, with various speeches and tributes made to our staff that were retiring, moving onto promoted positions and in some cases, those who have decided to step out of the profession.  The underlying message was, despite the challenge’s education has faced over the last year and the turbulence of leadership changes at the school, teaching really is a wonderful job which we are all proud and privileged to have as our profession.  This has been reiterated with a lovely communication from one of our students, who was happy to share his reflections on the school, when he finished his exams a few weeks ago.  Liam has kindly given permission to share his email, which can be found with our latest news.

This week we held our rearranged sports day which was a great success, with the weather almost holding out for the day.  Most students managed to dodge the downpour in the afternoon.  Walking around the event on Monday was a wonderful experience, watching our students participate in a variety of track, field and team events.  Results and individual success will be shared early in the new year.  This event showed the strength of community at The Deepings School.  Students had a genuine desire to see their friends and peers do well, motivating each other to achieve their personal best and in some cases offering their condolences where needed.  Tutors and support staff were out on the field supporting their tutor and year groups to be the best they could be.  These are values we will continue to foster under our shared values of

KINDNESS, RESPECT and AMBITION.

Thank you for your continued support of the school.  I wish you all a happy and relaxing summer break.

Yours sincerely

Ms K Johnson

Head of School
