News Bulletin 10 November 2023
BackDear Families of the Deepings School
It has been a week of sports, university visits and theatre at The Deepings.
This time of year is full of fixtures for our sports teams and they frequently get a mention in the weekly news. We hosted Spalding Academy for Year 11 netball this week and whilst the final result didn’t quite go in our favour, there were great examples of sportsmanship and team effort by The Deepings team.
Many students and parents have mentioned how there are less trips available to students since Covid. This has been a trend, however, I am pleased to share that in a slow and steady manner, trips are gently starting to feature in our curriculum once again. Trips must have an educational angle and tie into the curriculum. This week our Health and Social Care students visited Lincoln University to get a flavour of career opportunities and educational pathways into arrange of health associated employment. Do take the opportunity to read the excellent news story on their experience.
This morning, the Fire & Ice Theatre Company visited the school to perform 'In Our Own Words'. Billed as ‘Sex Ed the Musical,’ the production has been developed alongside relationship specialists and sponsored by the Arts Council for England. I was impressed at the way in which the theatre company pitched their messages to our audience of Year 10 and Year 12 students, tackling some difficult conversations in a manner which was page appropriate to their audience. They will be returning next week as part of our wider Personal Development programme for Year 11.
Next Friday it is Children in Need. I am delighted that our students are very keen to raise awareness of this charity by having a non-uniform day and raise funds for this well known charity. Students are asked to bring in a £1 donation, with some year groups putting on activities at break and lunchtime.
This weekend is a poignant one as we remember those who have lost their lives in conflict. This year, it is important for our school community to reflect on the catastrophic events happening in the world, which are distressing for us to see and hear of. Deeping St James Parish Council welcome students and their families to join them if they wish, at 2.15pm on Sunday 12 November 2023 at Deeping St James United Charities garden and process along Church Street Deeping St James to attend the Remembrance Service taking place at the Priory Church at 3pm.
Finally, this week I would like to wish a Happy Diwali to those families who are celebrating this weekend. On these dark winter days, a festival of light seems a very timely celebration.
Kind regards
Ms K Johnson
Headteacher
